Symington Building
Swedish Maidens

Materials: Donated crockery, buttons, jewels, coins and ceramic transfers

Celebrating the heritage of the Symington Building, former corset factory of R & WH Symington & Co. Ltd.

A series of 7 corsets were created for the new entrance area. Each corset is inspired by historical examples of corsets in the collection of Leicestershire County Council and Harborough Museum. Many of the materials were donated by local people, who had either worked in the factory or had a connection with the firm.   .

Swedish Maidens were the steam filled copper forms on which the corsets were moulded.  Anne commissioned Martin Newell to write a poem inspired by the female factory workers. The project was funded by Arts Council England
