Thrilled to be part of this wonderful festive trail, which sees twelve windows in empty shops transformed by a single chapter from Dickens' "A Christmas Carol".  I have created Scrooge along with his nephew for Chapter One (in Culver Square close to Paperchase).  The pieces were made with my usual blend of carefully hand cut victorian and vintage plates and cups from my collection.  You simply scan the QR code, plug in your headphones to hear the chapter narrated whilst looking at the artwork.  For more information and to download the map please go to the Christmas Carol Festive Trail website

Chalice of the Golden Bird

It felt right to note the Queen's passing today.  The studio has it's own Royal shelf, featuring coronations and jubilees over the decades.  The Queen's face has been looking down over the studio for many years and has featured in numerous works, more recently my Royal-Tea Chalices and the endless pennies I've used over the years but in abundance for The Cistern Chapel. RIP

"Our Eric" A Sculpture for EKCO park

Date: Nov 24, 2019

Sculpture in progress

Work is progressing well on a sculpture of Eric Kirkham Cole,  celebrating his achievements with the EKCO brand and the impact on Southend and its community.   The sculpture depicts Eric atop  his AD65 radio.  His suit will be mosaiced entirely from ceramic photographs of factory workers, products made and pcitures of EKCO social and sports events.  The sculpture is a combination of Corten Steel, Cold Cast Bronze and Mosaic.

With humble beginnings in a garden shed, EKCO went onto be one of the main employers in Southend, making everything from radios and televisions to wartime electronics, He was also one of the first to provide pensions, paid holidays and set up a sports and social club still active today.

Picture shows three former EKCO workers sharing their stories and holding the maquette at an open day held at the EKCO social club.   For updates go to my FB page.  There is also a great book called "EKCO Sounds" with an FB page.

Gift Of Life Artist in Residence Colchester University Hospital

Date: Jul 12, 2016

Gift of Life : River of Life  - A 20ft  mosaic to help promote organ donation

I'll be in residence at the hospital this week to talk about the mosaic alongside experts from the organ donation team. Very pleased to have been awarded this commission for the hospital's main entrance corridor.  Based on the Essex coastline with it's rivers and estuaries, the mosaic will contain hundreds of plates, buttons and beach glass donated from people all over Colchester.  The coastline was chosen as symbolic of the river of life, the ebb and flow of the tide, like breathing is about giving and receiving. Which is exactly what organ donation is - and much of my work. Embedded in the mosaic will also be a specially commissioned poem by Martin Newell.  This is inspired by a book containing thankyou letters from donor recipients to donor families.

The work will be completed in the autumn. For more info see the Colchester Hospital website.

Awarded commission for Symington Building, Market Harborough

Date: May 23, 2014

Symington Building Artwork Commission - Swedish Maidens

I've recently been awarded this exciting commission for the entrance to an old corset factory.  I'll be creating 9 corsets using crockery, jewels and buttons donated by local people.  The corsets will be based on those in the collection. Anyone remember the Liberty Bodice? Well Symingtons made them!

The Symington building now houses a museum, library and government offices.  The project is now underway with crockery collection points around the town.  It will be launched in the new year.

Harborough website has more details about crockery collections.  If you or anyone you know used to work at the factory we'd be really keen to hear from you especially if you have any photographs of the time.

History Tree & Leaves. Collaboration with Michael Condron

Phase 2 of the "History Tree" for Maidstone's new centre was completed in the Autumn.   An 8 metre stainless steel tree, with translucent mosaic at its base adorns the front of the building, with 17 steel and mosaic leaves changing from green to red blowing along the pillars.

The final phase of the project, set into the paving will be the shadow of the tree.  This will involve almost 50 etched leaves containing stories, anecdotes and historical facts gathered during workshops from people all over Kent.  The building was formally opened by the Duke of Kent in 2012.
